Tyler, The Creator‘s CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST won Best Rap Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards on Sunday (April 3). The chart-topping, gold-certified project fended off competition from Kanye West’s DONDA, J. Cole‘s The Off-Season and Nas‘ King’s Disease II to earn Tyler his second Grammy Award.

As his accompanying North American tour rolled into Portland, Oregon on Monday (April 4), the former Odd Future frontman took a moment onstage to shed more light on CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, including revealing the meaning behind the album’s name. As Sir Baudelaire explained, no, the title isn’t an offer to phone him for directions.

I’m glad he made the statement about doing research and respecting the genre. I remember OutKast winning album of the year Grammy for speakerboxx/the love below and 3000 shouting out the real fans. He alluded to people walking up to them like stankonia was their first album and asked people to “do the history.”

Respect the architects is what he’s saying. The guys that paved the way so Tyler could create.

I always figure the album was about taking a journey to open your mind out side of your comfort zone

“Yeah, we gettin' lost but we know who we am (true story)” from HOT WIND BLOWS; perfectly encapsulates the meaning of the album.

I am pretty sure when he said do your research, he meant, listen to older stuff from that genre to see the natural progression of it. Like if you're a fan of people from the odd future, listen to outkast, listen to MF Doom, listen to tribe called quest, listen to Wu-Tang, etc. Because those are the artists that your favorite people /musicians have been listening to throughout their entire life and who they draw inspiration from. So, I hear hints of Andre 3000 and the Neptunes and Pharrell and Doom in Tyler's work. I started listening to those guys because of Tyler, the gorillas with MF Doom, and Pharrell because the Neptunes did an awesome remix of a Daft punk song. And it really expanded my musical tastes and helped me appreciate more music and gave me more art to be able to listen to as well as to take personal inspiration from, for my own music.

This makes sense. If it wasn’t for Tyler, I probably would’ve never listened to DOOM, Dilla, or Stevie Wonder. Also liked how he applied this for all genres not just rap

I love how Tyler explained the meaning because when you hear the title, you might think to call him when you need him when instead he means call me and let me know how your holding up, on your own lost in the world. When he saying research, I think he means in the context of understanding the project and like reading lyrics and such. Tyler has grown as a person and as a artist and it reflected in his work. Story arch from Flower Boy to Igor to Call Me If You Get Lost has been beautiful

This message is gonna slip past most of the people in that audience. If you *really* love music, you'll do deep dives into the genres that you like.

Bro is 1000% right too many people like what we have now and don’t know how deep things really go and why they’re so crucial to what made everything today.

Nah fr. Ppl in social media don't rave for Gucci Mane as they do for Keef and Thug even though Gucci is an OG and collaborated with them in their early careers. I also remember when Gucci used to put newcomers on in his mixtapes.

Quality over quantity. Just because DJ Khaled's music is sonically louder doesn't mean people aren't bumping better quality music with their windows up. They both have a purpose in the industry but the votes have been tallied. Seems people appreciate Tyler's body of work more this time.

Im the one who took the original video that he retweeted. This was the Dopest show i been to all year! It was awesome to play the tiniest roll in capturing the moment that allowed him to really tell the world how he was feeling about his grammy win.

Honestly I kinda knew this. I think it’s in BLESSED he was talking about when you make it and get out there call me. This was his way of making a different interpretation on the meaning.

Yeah but tyler also said he doesn’t listen to all the OGs. He said you don’t need all the history to create and innovate. Maybe he’s wiser now
