RPGPundit Reviews: Adventure System

The Adventure System rulebook says it can be used for all variety of settings, and that it has a very simple system that stays out of the way of 'story'.
But does it?

This looks VERY similar to Savage Worlds, and not different enough to entice me to try it. Exploding dice, dice type for attributes and skills, no classes, talents (edges), setting specific rules, derived toughness and likely more. I enjoy Savage Worlds, but it isn't as rules light as it claims.

Thank you for the review.

"All in-game fiction is hell." - 100% True! It is always mere page-filler.

a lot of people(including me 5 years ago) think that without mechanics for a thing, that thing cannot happen. if you do not have a talking mechanic, than your character cannot be good at talking. if you do not have a mechanic for building a castle, than you can never build castles.
It took me a long time to realize that I will never build a "social combat system" that gives even a 100th the satisfaction of just role playing the conversation.

Man, great video. I love your reviews, they always seem to be very honest.

About this one... That's at least a good looking book... Better designed than your own non-DOM books, Pundit (I'm a huge fan of all your products, but the quality of your physical books apart from the DOM era is lacking, despite the amazing content and writing). Still haven't forgiven the bullshit designing/layout in Arrows of Indra and The Invisible College and the occasional mistakes in Star Adventurer. (I know I complain a lot about this, but I'm poor and live in a third world country so these books were EXPENSIVE, man.)

TTRPG games are like 1st grade art class.

Student 1: teacher, do you like my drawing?

Student 2: teacher, how about MY drawing?

Student 3: My drawing is better!

Student 4: Nah-Uh, mine is!

etc. etc.

Things have become a bit saturated at this point. I probably own a hundred RPGs, but I only play the grim ones, and ignore a lot of the window dressings.

Genre spanning Uni-system games like GURPS, D6 System, Hero etc, typically suffer from not being nailed to a genre and or setting; the answer "depends on the setting" when it comes to how to mechanically or thematically do a thing like this or that magic or tech effect sort of leaves you with one foot in the air until you decide firmly on a setting and type of game your players will explore. D6 is my favorite above all else but such genre spanning systems always demand work on the gm's part to cough up a setting and then fine tune house rules for that setting that deliver the tone theme and flavor of whatever fantasy or scifi the players want...for example in D6 the damage resist method I allow will depend on the theme, are players marvel types that soak up damage...use defaults; is it a grim dark mud and hut setting...no damage resist total, for example. This product though at least contained like the ww2 table for example, step in the right direction for unisystem organization of the books.

Exploding d4 averages 3.3. Exploding d6 averages 4.2. Far as I can tell, the d4 only has an edge when trying to roll a target of 6.

I own what's now known as Cortex Classic, which this reminds me a lot of, but with better interior layout. Much of the dice breakdown and advantage/disadvantage stuff reminds me of that, as well as the 'feats' used to build your character. I think it's probably fine for a party willing to put the effort in and learn it. Personally, I'm happy with the generic systems I have like Cortex or Cypher. I do not seek out too many on a part of I play enough Pathfinder or OSR that I haven't found a need.

Rule of thumb for ALL creators: In your product description and marketing - DO NOT use the words 'unique' or 'original'. Sorry, it's not.

They put a lot of work into it, but I'm afraid it fails my very first rule of game design which is: the title of your game should easily roll off the phrase, "What are we doing tonight? I know! Let's play..."
Let's play Adventure System.

Tge Cortex rule system also has dice for stats system.

13:44 Bro, all of OSR is taking any setting (low/high fantasy, gonzo sci fi, modern, WW2, wild west) and wrapping it around the D&D rules.

would you be open to giving feedback on a still in development RPG?

This sounds a bit like Savage Worlds in ways.

Offtopic for the content of the system, but the page background made me think speckles of dirt were sprinkled liberally throughout the book, or that the Pundit had done critical damage to the book by tapping it with the point of a pen. Maybe the effect looks different with a real page in front of you; on video it looks like some type of infestation or defacement. 🤔 Sometimes whatever aesthetic such book designers were going for just makes me scratch my head. 🧐

I would be curious to know why you dont like classless systems or dice pools. Also as for the d4 thing, it's not actually better than a d6. Your chances of exploding are higher but an exploding d6 i believe will net higher results more consistently

Why don't people like dice pools? They create a great bell curve of success probability.

This actually looks like a better version of Savage Worlds.

I absolutely detest the Advantage/Disadvantage system in 5e for the same reason you don't like the d4's higher odds of exploding! It borks the probabilities so goddamn much.

i dont understand this dice as score thing, but like everyone else, seems like a rip off of Savage Worlds. I have SWADE, not that i wanted it, just had to get it for some coding work... and it doesn't even seem fun, when like you say the percentage of rolling max number on a die is greater the smaller the number of sides the die has.

If that is what people like though, then they are welcome to it. I am always saying people should try new things and not succumb to FOMO and thinking you have to play D&D.
