What's ironic is that a lot who take at 62 because they need the money are the ones who could benefit from waiting for a larger payout because they have no other savings to fall back on.

You have to be careful with these overly simple explanations. The decision is a very personal one with many variables.

No you’re not losing 30%. 5 years from now time value of money will make that dollar with much less in purchasing power. In addition, if you don’t need it you can invest it for a higher return. In addition the system is broke. If you wait the 5 years it may be men’s tested or have your benefits cut. There is al to more to consider than what you’re illustrating. You are oversimplifying the decision.
