Dual GPU with NVLink: MASSIVE Video Editing Improvements!

Does a second GPU make much difference for video editing in DaVinci Resolve? How about if you connect the cards with NVLink?

In this video I demonstrate where you can expect performance improvements if working with Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) content, using a dual Quadro RTX 5000 setup.

Excellent side by side comparison of many factors! Thanks! Subbed!

I like to see these tools in context so I can understand when someone may need them.

Running an Nvidia Quadro M5000... second on the way for SLI for now... but thanks... the hardware accel on video edits with 1 was amazing!

UPDATE: I've been finding a few issues with NVLink in more recent versions of Resolve Studio (17.3 onwards), which you should consider. Whilst it still does provide a small performance benefit, it crashes if you try to use the nVidia encoder when rendering, and when playing complex timelines with multiple streams and effects. I've found that switching SLI off eliminates those issues. I've also found that other apps (like Affinity Photo & Designer) perform significantly better with SLI disabled. So, 2nd GPU is a great idea for complex timelines, but NVLink is something where your mileage may vary.

I professionally edit 5Kx2K 10-bit anamorphic videos ranging from 16-31 minutes in duration. I have two 2080Ti's in NVLINK, both watercooled and overclocked, yet performance suffers. DaVinci crashes due to GPU errors and VRAM filling up every 30 mins of editing or so. Restarting DaVinci always solves this, however, I've noticed the NVLINK doesn't duplicate the 11gb of VRAM from each card. 22gb of VRAM would greatly improve my workflow. I wish it was better implemented.

I would love for you to revisit this with the new M4 pro mac mini vs 2x RTX 4090

10:10 - NVLink is available for A4500 but not for A4000. However the A4500 card is not that popular.

Way above my head, but fascinating! Thank you Dave.

Really interesting video, keen to compare editors using same tests, to understand support. Adobe seems to be falling back in terms of supporting multi core and multi gpus etc.

The  17.3 verson of DaVinci Resolve have improve the M1 perfomance a lot. Cant wait to see your new test!

Im a muso, not a video guy, but my man, you get me immersed .. Good stuff... Non Biased and comparisons in tech that are more real world than the "Just because we can".. The limitations many of us may have, is what makes your channel, well, informational.

Great Job, exactly what I was looking for as some of my projects have over 30 video, image and audio streams. Grabbing my second RTX 3090 today for rendering.

Great video, clear and I am gonna try to add a GPU to the machine that I own

Nice one! With current prices of 30 series I was wondering how it goes if you mix 2 3090s for example but realised I dont do 3d anymore or editing of any sort so should just contemplate on money spending habbits and maybe buy another 64 gigs of ddr5 :P

Hey! why would you need such a beast? What else do you do with the work station other than video editing? Just curious....

For those who work with big timelines, 3D camera tracking, Resolve's AI features, etc. the shared VRAM will definitely benefit you. I never thought that I can strangle my 3090 this hard and I'm not even going hard in using e.g. magic masks or relight a lot. Might put a second one in my system soon...
Note: I'm doing everything I can to smooth things out - proxies, render caching, render in place, disabling clips during editing and enable them before rendering, etc...
Edit: ESPECIYALLY the new upscaling feature with RTX hardware support just sucks up VRAM like it's nothing

as always, a great performance check.
what about your 6, 1? are you not rendering on that lovely machine anymore?
cheers, jörg.
