What makes a great vintage in Champagne? A year when both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir perform exceptionally? Perhaps it comes down to having right weather conditions. In fact, there are many variables at play when it comes to determining a great vintage. Considering that vintage champagne and vintaged prestige cuvées make up a mere 6% of total annual production, and not every house produces one every year, a memorable vintage in Champagne is truly something special.

On Monday, October 11th, we will kick off Miami Champagne Week 2021 with an exciting look at Vintages in Champagne with Essi Avellan, MW. We are delighted to welcome Ms. Avellan back again this year to learn about three of the more recent vintages, and what makes them stand apart from others. Let’s travel to 2013, which gave a classic and cool style and produced age-worthy wines; 2012, which is considered one of the most exceptional of the decade and gave grapes that were low on yields but high on health; and 2007, a year of generous wines which is shown excellently by the example we will taste, Louis Roederer Cristal.

Attendees joining us from within the US will have the opportunity to taste along with a curated pack by 305 Wines that includes Louis Roederer Brut 2013, Louis Roederer Philppe Starck 2012, and Cristal 2007.

Ms. Avellan is Finland’s first Master of Wine, and is widely recognized as a champagne and sparkling wine expert. She is the author of several books on the subject, including “Essi Avellan’s Champagne” and is the organizer of Grand Champagne Helsinki.

We will taste the following champagnes:

Champagne Louis Roederer Brut 2013
Champagne Louis Roederer Philipe Starke 2012
Champagne Louis Roederer Cristal 2007

Alessandra Esteves, DipWSET, Director of Wine Education for Florida Wine Academy will be the moderator.
