Being assistant is far more challenging technically than being in the middle. It is also not appreciated by many that this is a co ordinated team effort. This is an excellent video although many referees have our own idiosyncratic ways for communication eg on penalties but as long this is explained during pre match there should be no issues. In the UK you can take assstant roles to a good standard of football even if you're inexperienced. Newly qualified refs should take every opportunity to take assistant roles as you get to see experienced Referees in action who should always willing to help you learn.
