The Christmas truce was a ceasefire agreement between the United Kingdom, France, Austria-Hungary, German Empire and the Russian Empire by men on the front lines in the trenches. It started when the Germans started placing candles on the trenches and erected a Christmas tree while singing Christmas carols. The British in turn starting singing carols too and it eventually led to soldiers leaving the trench into no man's land to exchange gifts of alcohol, candy and other gifts. As much as it was an incredible story it ended sadly as fighting continued the next day and countless would lose their lives and many of the leaders and soldiers alike were reprimanded and court marshalled for it since both sides felt it looked bad for the war effort.

It was not WW2, it was WW1. The Americans joined the war in 1917 and the first American troops arrived in 1918, not 1914. The truce was between the Triple Entente and the Central Powers, not just the Germans. And yes, they did play football.
