A simple LinkedIn profile tip to help get more recruiters to take notice of you.

Want to get more recruiters to notice you?

Here's a simple but effective LinkedIn tip.

Set your LinkedIn location to the city that you want to work in.

Recruiters search by location, even for remote jobs.

If you live in a small town, and not getting any recruiter DMs, change your location to a nearby major city. (we usually set 50 miles as the search radius)

Most recruiters won't eliminate great candidates because of this, and you'll give yourself a chance to be seen.

However, do disclose that you aren't located in the city, yet. Or be willing to make the commute for non-remote or hybrid roles.

PS...this also works great if you're targeting a new city to relocate to.

I live over 100 miles from the nearest city and never considered this, but it makes a ton of sense. Thanks!

Ah nice tip! I'll give it a try. I'm planning to relocate next month anyway.

I also put my title as a "Staff Accountant" instead of "Accounts Payable Specialist" because even though I was in AP, I wanted to be a staff accountant. Now recruiters are contacting me for staff accountant roles, and I ended up landing one.

That's a good idea. I'm will to do hybrid one week per month as opposed to days per week. I'm 140 miles from a major city.

Awesome. I'll definitely try that.

Will try! But should we change the location in the title section or in the experience section of our current job? Please clarify.

I've been doing this and I think it's helped at least a little. What I wonder is: I want to be in a specific region, and I don't feel like I'm being too picky when my target area is roughly the size of the state of Indiana, entirely contained in one of the 7-degrees-wide by 3-degrees-tall very-rural plains states that are along the 100° west meridian (i.e. one of the ones in the stack from ND to OK). But I feel like recruiters see my background work specialties and gloss over my location interests. I get inquiries for [role practically what I have previously did] in [state way too far east for me] much more than [role my past experience could potentially do] in [target area]. I don't feel obligated to tell LinkedIn where I actually am. It's harder to write my work background broadly enough.

Well, that may be great, for most. My area has few jobs, mostly very low paying. There are extenuating circumstances, I'm handicapped with no car. The nearist area with good jobs is 38 miles away (one way). I can't walk 3 miles and do eight and 3 miles home. Now, I'm open to suggestions, but I doubt you've got much. I've tried for three years for a solution. That's real solutions, not b.s. or smart remarks.

Is it hurting me to have my location as “United States” only? I do this for privacy but I’m getting no LinkedIn activity

How can I do that, can you help if I book for consultation with you?

Recruiters? Sure, but no recruitment agents. On the very first line of my linkedin profile I have written NO AGENCIES. They only waste your time.
