2024 Lexus LS 500h - Daily Driving The Old School Luxury Sedan

The current Lexus LS is one of the last "old school" luxury sedans. This hybrid variant is a bit weird, and I imagine it only exists for legal reasons, but it still delivered a week of magnificent smoothness for me.

Here's our spec:

Base Price $114,210
Special Color (Silver Illusion) $3,100
Rear Bumper Applique $95
Illuminated Door Sills $450
Dash Camera $375
Destination $1,350
Total Retail Price $119,380

"Luxury comes through in other ways apart from annoying technology". So true.
All this touch stuff, wide screens, black, piano plastic and hidden climate controls or unnecessary sportiness just stands in the way of really relaxing and true luxury.
We have the LS and the only altnative in the middle segment is the Lexus ES. All the money went into quietness and build quality.

I don't know why, but the interior door handles on these just look so elegant even tho they just look like the most plain door handle.

My IS250 has 18 years now and each time I get in, a smile appears on my face and a state of total relaxation. 😎

Great video! I think it’s so cool how Lexus still builds a full size saloon/sedan unlike the likes of Jaguar, Maserati, VW, (potentially Audi unless they have a new A8), . Lexus has sort of kept perfecting their current LS instead of making new tech overloaded facelifts which I appreciate. It’s refreshing to see a journalist/YouTuber that appreciates a car not having a sporty approach and doesn’t criticise it for that. Many reviewers in the UK would criticise a full comfort orientated car for handling and comment about critical steering feel which doesn’t make sense with a comfortable car. I agree with you on having a luxury car that’s floaty, it’s honest in what it does and there’s a sort of old school ‘old money’ vibe about a long land yacht that floats and doesn’t try to be sporty. Great video!

The Lexus LS 500 review was great, showing its smooth ride and comfort. I agree—luxury isn’t just about tech. It’s more about how the car feels, the quality inside, and the driving experience. A car like the Toyota Crown is a more affordable example of this kind of true luxury.

In my opinion 😅

Owner of a 2022 ES300h. I get why Lexus products are so loved. No issues at all at 50k. Easy to use (with all the buttons), comfortable, and extremely fuel efficient. Doesn't stand out like a sore thumb on the road.

I'm a younger gen-X and I'm so tired of too much tech in cars. I think it cheapens and de-values the car over time. It's not because I'm flummoxed by tech, it's because it takes you away from the business of driving which is dangerous, and they are systems that inevitably brick the car in 10 years or less. There's a reason you see the first generation LS-400s on the road in 2024 and they still look good / drive well.

Like you, I think the idea of luxury should be centered around quality, comfort, relaxation, decompression. GT cars were supposed to be sport forward performance sedans but luxury was always more about quality, comfort, fit and finish. I don't think tech shouldn't exist but I am tired of it being so prominently featured. I want analog gauges. I don't want a display with a billion options. I want dedicated controls for things that are most commonly utilized. At bare minimum I don't want to menu dive to adjust my mirrors or climate vents.

This will make the LS owners angry, but sometimes I cannot tell the difference between the ES and LS, which is a statement of the ES success as well as how Lexus should be doing a lot more to differentiate the two models.

Owned many german cars (merc, BMW, etc), also owned lexus, wouldn't touch another german car with a ten foot pole. Lexus are far superior in quality and reliability.

The LS has always been my dream car since it was the LS400.

That silver is stunning. I love the simplicity of this car. I have always wanted to get the non hybrid variant of this car to complete my ultimate analog “two car solution”, with the other car being a 2024 Cayman GTS 4.0. Have also toyed with late 2020s GX460, which is even more old school/analog.

Props for mentioning the W140! It still holds the crown for me when it comes to luxury!

The seats itself probably cost more than my entire truck. 🤣🤣 So luxury

You're not wrong, I think some decent tech + supple ride quality is far more important than maximum tech + enthusiast driving performance in the luxury segment. The people who can afford these cars are not young, it simply alienating the consumer who can afford one.

That front 3/4 angle makes me think this car would look incredible as a shooting brake or wagon.
