aw i hoped there would be a mention of Operation Yellowbird; while not technically a US government initiative, the CIA was heavily involved in it and the actions resulting in it

tl;dr: western intelligence organizations including the CIA and MI6 actively funded and trained student groups which later led protests/riots in China in 1989 (including the Tiananmen Square protests), then arranged for their travel into British Hong Kong and abroad to the west once the Chinese government began to investigate. it’s definitely relevant nowadays considering how strongly the US has pushed the mythos of the “June 4 1989 protests” in education and whatnot
