“There’s a Tornado in My Colon” #really

Trapped wind and bloating can be uncomfortable and may sometimes signal underlying bowel problems. These symptoms occur when gas builds up in the digestive system, causing a feeling of fullness, tightness, or swelling in the abdomen. While bloating and trapped wind can be linked to conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), or even more serious issues like bowel obstructions, they can also be triggered or exacerbated by certain foods.

Foods that are high in fiber, such as beans, lentils, and some vegetables, can produce more gas as they are broken down by bacteria in the gut. Similarly, foods that are difficult to digest, like those high in fat or certain artificial sweeteners, can contribute to gas build-up. Dairy products can also cause bloating and trapped wind in individuals who are lactose intolerant, as their bodies struggle to break down lactose, leading to fermentation in the gut.

For individuals with existing bowel problems, consuming these types of foods can intensify symptoms. For instance, someone with IBS may experience more severe bloating and discomfort after eating foods that trigger their condition. It’s important to identify specific food triggers and manage dietary choices carefully, as persistent bloating and trapped wind should not be ignored. They could be signs of an underlying digestive issue that needs medical attention, especially if accompanied by other symptoms like pain, changes in bowel habits, or weight loss.

Strangely enough, depression can also cause increased flatulence. For some reason, some depressed and/or anxious people tend to swallow more air without noticing.

It's interesting that you bring up that artificial sweeteners can cause excess flatulence/gas. I was often wondering why a day or so after consuming energy drinks and that kind of thing, or even hours later, I have more gas than normal. While we're on the subject of the "rear cannon", I find artificial sweeteners can also have a laxative effect. This video gave me a bit of an understanding of how certain foods can impact gas production and that in the gut.

I just discovered I’m allergic to the bacteria they use to make yoghurt and yoghurt-adjacent products. I thought it was just lactose intolerance. But I didn’t react to custard. And then had a reaction (burning mouth, sore throat, cramps) to oatgurt that had yoghurt bacteria added.

My mind was absolutely blown that this was even a thing.

I feel extra bad for the baby because they literally can't tell you specifically what's going on😢

Simethicone is the best friend of inflamed intestine. If you're having mysterious cramps, sometimes it feels like you intestines are gluing themselves together or having nails tacking them, try a simethicone. If you have burning pain with it, and other IBS or GERD symptoms, add in cimetadine or famotadine. If one of the 'dines don't work, try the other. And if the two don't work, you absolutely need to see a doctor about your pain.

As an Asian, warm water with lemon after waking up (empty stomach) and before bedtime works too

I've had digestive issues my whole life. 6 times a day is the most I manage and a bowel movement every 3 days.

I do have IBS but it seems like all the foods that are "safe" or even helpful to most other sufferers make my symptoms worse. For example I have no problem digesting "hard to digest" foods like broccoli and cabbage, but if I have a single raw carrot I will have stabbing pains and cramps within 45 minutes. Sourdough messes with my gut too even though every source says sourdough should not cause any symptoms even with people who have IBS and often is good specifically for them.
I was going to get more tests done since colon cancer runs in my family but sadly I live in the USA. Thirteen years of symptoms, fifteen more before I can get a colonoscopy covered by insurance 😂

12-25 sounds like WAYYY too much. Im not ashamed to admit I fart. I let out like 5-7 good ones a day. But like i usually break out the 12s or more on days when ive had that Italian/indian/mexican food. 12 for the average seems like way too much😬

I keep hearing that we are supposed to pass gas like 10+ times a day. But idk. I maybe pass gas like 10 times in a whole month, and its primarily only around the time of my "monthly." I do suffer gastroparesis though, so idk if that has anything to do with it.

I don’t remember a single day in my life in which I’ve farted 12 times. I’m certain that I sometimes go an entire day without farting. I eat a lot of fermented foods that I ferment and can myself, you’d think that would make someone particularly gassy (especially the Sauerkraut), but I can’t say that I am. 🤔

Now I feel compelled to record my daily winds just in case I’m mistaken. I’ll report back when I have more data. 🤓💨
