I have a theory.

Back when school still taught science, i learned that the human eye has two different types of vision cells, rods and cones. We use rods for night vision (scotopic vision) and cones for color vision (photopic vision). When we use night vision devices, we are using photopic vision by amplifying the available ambient light i.e. starlight, moonlight, etc. viewing a monochromatic green light is more challenging for the eye to process. Black and white vision is done at night when using scotopic vision which utilizes the rod cells. So, a black and white monochromatic sight picture is just less work for our brains to process.

Theory complete

IMO they show exactly the same thing detail wise, I couldn't see any differences really... I think it's way easier on the eyes in B&W and that might be what tricks the mind into "seeing" more details. That said, I'm not motivated enough to change settings in between every raid lol. Good work on the vid!

I feel it has a lot more to do with the brightness being turned all the way down to -100. I will say it does provide a slight advantage but anyone who is using post FX has nothing they can really say about this. If you use post FX to change the brightness and color up when in a daytime to see into dark spots in a raid you can't complain about someone using post FX to turn the brightness down in a nighttime raid. Just my thoughts.

So as someone who has been video editing for a while the biggest thing is that the white balance is not as high. And to keep it really simple: when the colors are far on either spectrum; especially when you have a hard dark mixed with a lot of “hot” white, it’s harder for your eyes (technically your brain) to sort through the details quickly. Having the color more on a neutral scale makes it easier to process. But preference is key. Even though something may been technically the most optimized, comfort and familiarity are always the best “stats” to go on.

Now if you get technical about how the rod and cones of eyes function there is a more satisfying answer but I rather not write my dissertation on it (though that’s a good idea for one). As some background I am a film student who works for a video promotional company. If you ever wanted to reach out so you can hear the longer explanation of things I would be happy to do so.

There is a reason why NVGs are green IRL. They have a filter to specifically make the image green because the human eye can see contrast better in green environments (due to our evolutionary process in the trees, grass etc). Maybe it's different in game, I certainly think that black and white is easier to play with.

There is some bloom reduction from turning the brightness setting down to -100. You can see it really well in daytime raids. Your bloom example at 7:38 is lens flare, not bloom.

Honestly I just slap brightness and saturation on -100 each for the chat experience. Usually just more comfortable on the eyes.

The B&W is definitely easier on the eyes for me, with green I have to squint just cause green is such an aggressive color somehow, especially when the picture is very bright.
Another thing that I noticed tho (and this might just be my brain playin tricks on me) is that in green things look more three dimensional ? In B&W it looks like a flat image, in green it has more depth to it to my eyes if that makes sense ?
Anyways ^^

Good video Geeks ! Love your stuff bud 💖

ive used the colored bulbs in my room and some colors just pop a bit more, green especially. if you have an rgb bulb, light strip, or anything that you can change colors, pick a neutral colors then swap it to green, it comes across very powerful and possibly flashbangs you. black and white is just more settle on the eyes so the bright lights aren’t sticking out as much

I'm purchasing NVG's IRL, although the game doesn't have White Phosphor Tubes (Except maybe the N-15's, but those are a lot more blue than White Phosphor Tubes should be). Essentially what's happening is that your eyes are only using 1 photoreceptor with a Green Phosphor Tube, but the White Phosphor work on all 3 receptors. The green was more commonly used about 2 or 3 decades ago, because the theory was that because your eye has about twice the green receptors, the image from First and Second Generation NVG's would appear brighter, which was good because if you go look at those on Youtube, they're super bad at enhancing light into a good picture at night. Nowadays, since some major leaps in technology with NVG's were made, we don't really need to cheat our eyeballs into enhancing a dark image for us. With the brightness we have attained in the modern day, the green tubes actually strain our eyes a whole lot. Moving to White Phosphor is a tradeoff IRL- a very, very slightly darker image for an extreme gain in reducing eye strain. And bleeding edge Filmless White Phosphor NVG's don't even need that tradeoff anymore.

TL;DR - Green only works on one Photoreceptor which accounts for a higher percentage of visible color recognition than white. Since our screens are very bright, it overstimulates the green photoreceptor and adds eye strain. White is very, very (Almost negligible) slightly darker than Green, but because it shares the color across 3 color receptors, it distributes that brightness across all of them. It's not brighter, it's just not putting all that color into one type of receptor and not overstimulating your eye.

This is super cool! The green NVG has always been hard on my eyes. Which is why I've actually been reluctent on using NVG all together and not doing night raids. Knowing I can do this, I might give it a try and see if I can do night raids and attempt to use NVGs again. Thanks for this tip! =)

It basically looks the same but instantly less strain on my eyes I think the green is just so intense to the point it kinda hurts my eyes

IRL, green phosphor NVGs cause headachea and is eye straining due to only using you eyes green cones. White phosphor NVGs uses the majority of your cones and rods, lending to less eye strain.

I imagine this has the same effect while playing the game.

Just a science tip, the human eye has 100 million rods (see black and white) and only 6 million cones (color vision). Also those cones are packed at the center of your eye around your optic nerve and the cones are outside of that section. This means all peripheral vision is black and white, just your brain uses previous information to apply color. Because of this black and white causes less eye strain and is why modern nvg's are becoming black and white (aka white phosphorus nvgs). But my opinion is that both have there merits, I have run feather on night runs for like 3 wipes albecause its an option. Observation on testing with green and post fx, did you have brightest higher than black and white cause that would cause more light polutulion/haze. The downside of feather is when you toggle nvgs up in lit areas your vision is still black and white.

I think it might be that human eyes are better adapted for detecting intensity differences on a black to white gradient than a white to green gradient.

Definitely easier on the eyes - as I was watching this I decided to try it in raid and it's a big difference on eye strain, at least to me. I don't know that it's an advantage though, I went back and forth while I was on Shoreline and I think I could see the same detail and distance either way, it was just easier to look at the black and white image than the green one. And it's options that are built into the game, so I don't think it's an exploit or cheating, just a clever way to use the game engine to your "advantage", perceived or not.

the color spectrum that the human eye can see a broader variety of green than any other color. your eye can see more shades of green hence why NVG's are green.

Great info, I think for sure the b/w is easier on my eyes, I’d love to see how people show up in each light. Lots of hard work done on this and it’s appreciated

I tested it and It only helps if there is artificial lights on in a building. In the woods and outdoor areas with moon light or no light I dont see a difference other than color.
