2 or 3 nights before we had to put our 10 yr old GSD down, he was struggling to breathe. However when he heard us talking about his “red ball”, as opposed to his 3 other balls, he struggled to get up and get it and bring it to us. We were never the same. He wanted so badly to please us even when he was on his death bed.

My friend actually fell on the bathroom floor while recovering from surgery and couldnt get up. His Getman Shepherd was wearing her training harness. He told her to drag him to his bed. She had never heard this command before but after tilting her head a few times figured it out. He held onto her harness and she dragged him to his bed. Smart girl.

Many dogs have a large vocabulary. They understand much more than you think. And German Shepards are the best. They are such a lovely dog.

Super intelligent. I talked to my shepherd for 13 years. We communicated easily. She brought me my shoe one day (she wanted to go for a walk) so I told her okay, well go get my other shoe and she did just that.

Our now deceased Border Collie could understand complex instructions. We could look in his eyes and actually see that his brain was thinking mode. He would sometimes watch whatever we were doing then teach himself to do the same things. I will always miss that dog. 😢

They absolutely learn words. They also learn to spell. One time, I was teaching a puppy training class and I spelled the word "S-I-T". All 5 pups sat at the same time!
