This is a clip from a recent performance at Cotton Club in Tokyo, Japan. This is a cover of Pat Metheny Group song entitled "As It Is" from the album "Speaking of Now." This is a song penned by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays who have been musical partners/composers in the Pat Metheny Group. I remember being in high school and first listening to this album. When I was younger, I enjoyed driving and listening to music (actually still do to this day). I covered quite a few miles listening to this album - I like PMG's compositional sensibilities as well as the overall sonic experience. Also, it made me happy to hear the news of Pat becoming a NEA Jazz Master. A few months ago, I was in my practice room and decided to do this cover. I picked this composition because this was actually the first Metheny song I ever heard nearly 16 years ago. This song is an extended composition with multiple sections, hills and valleys throughout its musical structure.
