I was thinking "well you're going to destroy your seeds too..." Then I see the seeds look like table pepper and said oh, ok.

My dad had a small cement mixer. He used it to separate things from their hulls, seed heads, etc. He originally was looking for a way to remove the outer hull off walnuts more efficiently. Not only did he eat the nuts, he saved the outer hulls to make organic stains. It was easy-to-use for walnuts, sunflowers, fall mums, etc.

I am currently collecting our native plant seeds at home. Thanks for all the tips. I won’t be using one of these, but I did get our our old gold pans. 😁

man this channel rocks; i really admire the work you do. 🌱growing up in the midwest, it was so sad to see new developments destroy beautiful fields of tall grasses and flowers (and their accompanying fauna) for some cookie cutter single-family homes with boring, ugly, and out of place non-native turf grasses. it doesn't help that a lot of people live in places where homeowners associations straight up say you have to keep your lawn neatly manicured, and they're usually pretty strict about how high your grass can grow and what kind of sod you can use. we really really need intense conservation efforts for native flora and fauna, as well as high density housing (and the infrastructures to support it) if we want to keep suburban sprawl from choking out every grassland in america. i really admire the work you do, keep it up. 💚

Those tiny seeds remind me of moss roses or canip seeds, teeny tiny seeds.

You can disperse the seed heads too. They’ll decay and leave the seeds to germinate in spring.

Modern day Jonny Appleseed. Save what you can. Living in Wyoming, sometimes when we get some good rain. I will go out and pick a few flowers for my yard. Never liked the idea of a lawn.

you could probably cut the plastic opening in the top to be wider so that you dont need that waste o' time green thing to jam the seed heads in there.

How would these seeds be spread in nature? Are they eaten by animals and then 'passed'?

Then there's me thinking that when your seedlings (?) are dry, lay them on a tarp (in a colour where you can see the seeds) and just walk on them and the pods surely would open. But you bought that shredder thing, I'm just worried that if the seed is too big, the shredder will shredd that too. But most importantly, you're doing excellent work.

That thing looks like it'd take a long time to smush the seed heads in.

Do it like our ancestors would have… Simply put them together in big bags and get your kids, nieces and nephews or friends kids to make a game out of walking on the bags sitting on them and jumping on them. Whoever gets the most seeds done wins a treat of your choice. Nothing better than a little child labour here and there 😝😂 and you can thank me later for all the money you’ve saved on electric. Win win.

Just need a fine screen so that seeds can fall through and you can pull the pods out easily

I have a feeling that the resistance getting it in there is going to become an issue itself. I feel like going back to the earliest history of grinding processing would solve this issue better. As long as you are satisfied, that is what counts. My sister in law is 'Mrs. Millennial Farmer " and she loves and learns from your content. Maybe she and Zach can give you some ideas.
