Edward C. Bairstow (1874-1946) - Prelude no. 1 (from Three Short Preludes)
Показать описание
Bairstow was born in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. He studied the organ at Balliol College, Oxford and received his Bachelor of Music degree from Durham University in 1894. From 1913 to his death in 1946, he was organist at York Minster, after which he was succeeded by Francis Jackson.
Barstow wrote music mainly in the Anglican Church tradition and some 12 organ works were published in his lifetime, most notably the underplayed but masterful Sonata in E flat of 1937 (whose famous Scherzo movement often features in recitals and recordings).
This reflective, short Prelude is the first of a set of three, published in 1947 by OUP, a year after Bairstow's death. Initially making use of the softer colours of the organ and the more delicate solo reed stops, the piece builds to a noble and gradual climax, only to quiten rapidly to restate the charming and dignified theme again. Although different in style from Eric Thiman, whose first set of Times and Seasons I have also recorded for YouTube, Bairstow is an expert telling a musical story in miniature form. The second Prelude will follow in a subsequent recording, and the final piece in the set will feature during Advent.
Sample set: Hereford Cathedral (from Lavender Audio) via Hauptwerk
