It's a song about dying knowing you've lead a fulfilling life. You don't need to be mourned because you have done what you wanted. Drink, Eat, Mine, and Die holding your axe in the dark.

Only dwarves can make a song about dying alone in the dark so happy.
Gotta love DF.

I feel like Dwarven cultures generally have a ton of work songs, traveling songs, etc. Things like Diggy Diggy Hole that aren't terribly complicated - just vocals and maybe some form of percussion to mark out a rhythm, allowing the dwarves to keep the rhythm with each swing of the pick, each step, each blow of the hammer upon the anvil.

Many different musical genera take these simple lyrics and put instrumentation behind these songs that everyone in that fortress knows. This can result in long, intricate, and beautiful songs being written from short, repetitive work songs. As often happens to songs, a musician will sometimes generate new, more complex lyrics for songs whose origin is a horseshoe-forging song, or a porter's work song.

Dwarves aren't too good for honest work. Even the most powerful dwarves know the pleasure of making something beautiful with your own two hands. Even the most pampered princess of the Mountainhome could never forget how it feels to hew your own mug, or your own earrings, from the very stone of the Mountainhome. And these songs, linked intrinsically to physical labor at their very heart, are a staple of Dwarven culture, beloved by every class and creed.

Now that the tavern update is out, its finally starting to feel like my dwarves are more than just surviving, they have culture.

The first time i was listening to this, I was 15 years old. Now I'm 27. Still, the enjoyment is the same.

has admired a joyous song recently. Has quit life. Interrupted by Dwarf Fortress.

This song only gets better when you realize the dedication in that to write the lyrics he must have gone into Dwarf Fortress and read all the words he needed in the naming menu and then organized them into lyrics.

Dwarf Fortress (available from the download on Tarn Adams' site, linked in the description) includes the language files. From the installation folder, go to raw/objects. The language used here used here is language_DWARF.txt. I hope that helps!

Thanks to you for the visual and lyrical aspect.
Thanks simon for being unafraid to fully embrace your dwarvenness with every ability you had.
Thanks for Tarn for never ever giving up on making this the best simulation ever.
Thank you all.

When I die, I hope I wake up as a dwarf in the mountain. Beneath the stone and surrounded by family and friends. The warm glowing fires scattered about and the endless supply of searing pork and cold ale. I will walk straight in the middle of the room as I squint my eyes looking around at my kin, then with a mighty loud roar I will yell out. "Tankard Basher!" and so the night would begin....
