Great video! Note: Because I'm old and my hearing is not great, I have to put you on .75 playback speed to catch what you're saying. Makes you sound like you've had too much to drink (lol). Will be looking up your new channel. Thanks.

Great video! I first started hunting with a 50# Bear TD in 1978 and moved up to a 75# Bingham TD in 1980 at age 16. I often used a friend’s bow which was 90#’s but I was so used to the 75# that it felt like nothing, but, I could not be as accurate with the heavier bow. I learned that shooting is “athletic” and if you use a heavy bow to just develop muscles in the off season then “down bow” for the hunting season, life was relaxed. Then came pure accuracy using ridiculous tiny targets….aim small…miss small mentality. I learned to hold a draw until I was totally able to check all my mental parameters to get very accurate. I got to the point I could hit a playing card sideways at 15-20 meters in perfect conditions….impossible now as I am getting back after a 35 year hiatus but we shall see…thank you for recharging old energy!

Didn't know you hunted elk. Would love to see some pics or footage, always impressive with a trad bow.

Been teaching my 8 year old about deer hunting this year. Last night was our last outting on pas ag tag season. We spent an hour stalking the long route to a downwind approach of a bedding area butted up to a cut feild they feed in. We stalked within 60 yards of bedded deer in brawd daylight, set up the blind, ate lunch and waited. An hour later, a loud truck roared past and they all got up and fled. I told my son that same thing "you can do everything right and still fail, and that's okay" he's ganna be a great hunter.

My first year hunting deer with a recurve, I set 10 yards as my distance limit. To this day it was the most fun I've ever had hunting.

I am so happy to hear some one talk this way. yes heavy arrows. A 50 or so pound bow shooting 20 yards or less. This is the Way. I am not trying to impress myself with a super heavy bow or shoot at a range I cannot reliably hit. Thank you again for the honesty. Accuracy is best.

In his comments about practice, he referenced being excited. I know when hunting, my heart rate always went up. It's definitely not like shooting at a target in my back yard! I found a good practice was to run up to my shooting point, short sprints, and shoot with my heart rate up. It makes a difference in training. Also shooting from different positions. Rarely will a person get to shoot his game standing straight up like he might in his back yard. That might also make considerations about the bow you're using. Is it comfortable to shoot while hunched over. For the record, I ground hunted. I don't like heights so never used a tree stand. Obviously, practicing for that would be different than what I'm describing, other than raising the heart rate. In any case, practice the way you'll hunt.

When I was living in Oregon for 46 years I would go elk hunting and deer hunting in Oregon Idaho and Washington State and I would get a moose tag in Idaho and in Washington State I've only used a high-powered rifle about six times out of all of those hunts the rest of it has been trades Bows a muzzleloaders my limitations with my tradbow is about 25 yards I like to get as close as I can have a really good knack for doing that and most of the bows that I was shooting back then were between 60 and 65 lb I still have the ability at 66 years old to shoot a 70 lb bow comfortably so you know poundage isn't the problem it's getting as close as possible being ethical about what you're doing it's not all about killing that game but it's about making sure that that game is hit correctly and dies quickly but my bones bow that I got from you guys I took my first mule deer in California last year with that bow it wasn't a gigantic deer antler wise is a 4 x 4 but it weighed 248 lb it was a very very heavy dear very healthy and I put a 505 grain arrow straight through the boiler room he ran maybe 15 yards and drop dead I took my first black bear in the state of California that I've ever shot here that same season with that same bow and shot completely through a 250 lb black bear you have to be consistent you have to be confident on what you're doing and you have to be ethical and I know I've said that word a couple of times nowI don't get Buck fever anymore I used to when I was younger but not anymore I sit and wait I'm real calculated about what I do I keep my body absolutely scent-free or a scent-free as I can I make my own pine scent from cedar trees my own dirt scent from the area that I'm going to hunt I go and get dirt from there and I put it in bags and try to keep my my scent out of it and I mix all this up with distilled water and it's never failed me I've had deer walk up to me separately especially younger ones and put their noses on me I get the biggest uplifting of affect just to be able to get close enough that I can put my hands on that live deer just touch them I do use a half ghillie suit and I'm silent very very quiet and I don't move around a lot.

I learned a lot, stuff I'd been working through, speed vs. weight. Thanks for the insights.

I love the way that you prioritize accuracy over anything else. The old saying is true. It ain't the arrow, it's the Indian. You have to know your limits and stick to them.

I am just getting into traditional archery, I have hunted with a compound since i was 15 and have taken many deer so I'm excited to start traditional hunting! I'm going to be using a 50lb 1976 bear grizzly that i got at at thrift store for $120. I ordered a new string that has bever fur and arrow shafts! Do you have any tips on how to aim with the bow besides feel like is there different hand placements on the string for different yardages or do you try to keep the same placement and remember were your holding?

Hi I appreciate your helpful videos and sharing your knowledge
I have a question. I bought a Black hunter longbow lefthanded at 42 lb pull. I shoot a 500spine arrows with 225 grains up front total arrow weight is 525 grauns and I am getting left arrows.I shoot 3 fingers and anchor corner of my lip. The arrows fly left even the bare shaft flew in the same spot. I tried shiming out my rest riser pad and it helped some but the arrow is pointing out to the right. Could I be to stiff on the arrow cause it is bot flexing enough around the rise. I respect your judgment and knowledge to hopefully get your opinion on this situation. Thank you for for your help. I saw one guy in the 2010's take a deer with what I know now as a 30 pound bow at 27--28 inches as in South Dakota this is the minimum for deer/turkey since 2002 or so becuse 90% now since 2020 are hunting with Compound most of the others are using a Lever Bow as this for people who want to shoot more traditional Aiming and fingers are using Lever Bows with about 2% and growing are using a traditional bow without a sight. It was 98% using compound in 2002 when the laws were changed from 35 pounds to now for deer/turkey. Recently the Elk/Antelope game moved from 45 to 40 pounds not that one can get close enough to hunt Antelope even with a Compound so only about 1% do try and very few Elk in the state so few hunt Elk with a bow or gun only about 5% of population total. Anyhow the guy that was Native was using one of the cheaper traditional bows you can get on Amazon that is using the older style metal Compound shelf with all fiberglass limbs/foam and fiberglass limbs. He had a bowfishing type of rest on the bow that looked made from a replacement plastic roller for a cheap screen door you can buy and a galvanized in the proper thread screw with galvanized bolt using blue Loctite thread locker holding the bolt on. He was the only person I have seen using a bow to get Deer on this island only allowing bowhunting where Island has a man-made causeway dating originally from the 1930's CCC program. More people get Turkeys from here in Spring then Deer in the Fall.

If you look into the ashby foundation, reports doctor ed ashby shows that you can actually take even rhinoceros with a forty pound traditional bow, IF you have optimized the arrow itself. It's far more important to look at his findings that the weight of pull. If someone's limiting themselves to traditional in a pure sense and only using Stone arrow tips. There's only so much you can do but otherwise his research is essential reading IMHO (PhD scientist who got interested in bow hunting and it took me 10 years to finally put it all together). I'm lucky I missed early on as those arrows were very poor choices given all I've learned.
Can't recommend Dr. Ashby's findings strongly enough, they might be difference between hunting with traditional equipment being banned vs applauded.

I have both. I don't hunt I like archery for backyard targets shooting my vintage 1980s compound bows are awesome but I use my all fiberglass longbow a little once a day maybe then switch to compound bow the next day. I use bows as 45lbs to 60lbs on my bows compound at 60lbs and a longbow at 45lbs.

So crazy silly idea/comment? Can you outfit a takedown recurve bow with a sight like a compound? I have a pretty good anchor.. I bet I could get out to 30yds pretty accurately pretty quickly with a sight on a takedown.. I mean, I guess that's what olympic archers do right?
