Doomslug was a great companion. Now to rack my brain for things to recommend, so many of these I was just agreeing with you on yes that is the perfect book. 🤣

so many books I still need to get to!!
Oh now that I think about it ... the second trilogy in the Powder Mage series has the girl & the big scary protector in it done to perfection in my opinion - and they stay an essential part of the story down to the last page :D
And the first trilogy has a similiar dynamic like this as well actually o.o" I think you could love it 😆

Ooooh we have so much overlap in our tastes!! So just trust me and read these books:
Renia by Karl Forshaw, The Fall Is All There Is by C.M. Caplan, Sea of Souls by N.C. Scrimgeour, No Heart for a Thief by James Lloyd Dulin (it has the wolf/cub theme like in The Last of Us!!), and A Quiet Vengeance by Tim Hardie 🥰

For older protagonist, I would suggest Race the Sands by Sarah Beth Durst (also desert setting - standalone fantasy). T. Kingfisher also has a lot of older protagonists and non-verbal animal companions, but if I remember correctly, you're not a fan of her writing style. A Sorceress Comes to Call has an older protagonist and horror elements, and Seventh Bride has an animal companion (also horror elements)

Not really fantasy but The Girl with all the Gifts is a great horror mushroom book and the book set in th same world which is The boy on the bridge
