…this is the brand-new Slater Designs BOSS UP from Kelly Slater and Dan Mann.

Who’s it for? – Continuing the theme of the new “Boss” range, it’s probably the most versatile and accessible board from Kelly yet. Anyone looking for a board that’s going to give them early wave entry and heaps of paddle power, without compromising too much on performance.

What conditions? – Anything from thigh to overhead waves. Like the HI Mid 6 and CI M23, it has better good-wave potential than something like the CI Mid for example. It’s a really well balanced Mid for everyday surfing and will generate speed with ease and is surprisingly good in sub optimal waves too.

How to size it – It doesn’t command you dial-in your volume perfectly. Anyone can ride the Boss Up in a variety of sizes. Dan Mann rides the 6’8” and the 7’0”, while Kelly, Shane Dorian, Kevin Schulz and all of us here have stayed on the 6’8”. Ride it around 13 litres more in volume than your standard shortboard.

What fins? – It’s got to be the quad set up to maximise speed and performance, we’ve been using the Slater Endorfins quads, works really well.

Firewire’s boss up looks strangely like Al Merrick M23😉

To me, that's a short board. Who decided where the size of the mid leagnth starts. I say 7'0 is the bottum size. Or 6'8 maybe.

I have a 6’11 x 20 with a pretty thin and Pinter nose and a fish tail, is this a midlength or a gun

Shame there's no plain twin setup option...

For me at least 7‘0… difficult to get the gliding feeling on a 6‘8 in my opinion
