Only respect for this man. Regardless of what side you're on, he is just searching for the honest truth and gave his life for that search. RESPECT ❤

I'm really not being funny when I say God rest his soul. He was a good and inspirational man.

Thank you for doing this about Dan Dennet. I absolutely loved his approach to philosophy. I considered him a living philosopher, which is so rare. Even though he was an atheist he was a deeply spiritual man- as he appreciated art and beauty- but he never broke with reason which I found to be inspiring.

Great now I have to learn how to play 4 dimensional schmess.
Michael Levin had a great anecdote about Daniel on his blog. He really seemed like a great person.

To presume that a form of philosophy is a waste of life, is to presume that one knows what a valuable, or worthwhile, life is. Some people may say that sculpting is a waste of precious time in life. I remember hearing once from a person who worked with hospice, that she learned that different people enjoy different things, and one can't decide what would be enjoyable, or meaningful for someone else at the end of their life. She said she had a man who thoroughly enjoyed eating chocolate ice cream and watching television. To her that was wasting the last precious moments of life, but to him, it was doing his favorite things, And it made him happy.

As a biologist, I care a lot about the questions he says biologists don't care about, and I don't think I am the only one. Of course, we usually don't try to answer these questions a priori, but through the study of real living beings. Sometimes we speculate, though, and there's nothing wrong with that, . I don't think good philosophers are very different. Caring about precise definitions can be very helpful, if you really want to understand the "phenomena".

I guess that what he's saying is: do not waste time trying to define everything, debate what matters. The issue itself.
Not that definitions aren't useful, but they don't solve the issue at hand.

Don’t agree with Dennett here on definition, mostly. The topic was my speciality while complete the half a PhD in Philosophy I completed. Generally, didn’t agree with much he said on the major classic philosophical problems. Yet, appreciated Dennett’s popularization of many of these problems.

We are all idiots and don’t really know anything ! Haven’t you realized this fact yet ! So it doesn’t really matter who you talk to you see ! We all have the ideas, opinions, of what should and what shouldn’t be but again in reality we know nothing the only thing we think we know is, that we know everything, but again we just don’t really learn anything it just goes round and round, and that’s all we got we have never really been anywhere, and we are we are going no where it’s just what is and that’s it from birth to death that’s all there is !!!surprise !👍😀

Wanting to define everything all the time reminds me of all those discussions about free will.
Discussions about free will seem to have the opposite problem: Often they lack a proper definition, and people mistake voluntary choice with free will, because that is what is meant with free will in justice and psychology ... 🤔
Of course you can take this further and ask: What is will? Or: What is Freedom? 😅
The other extreme is not defining anything and everyone talking past each other ... ?🙃

I'm curious to know if the younger Preston Dennett was a distant relative of this man.
