I took a day trip from Rome (no luggages) and wanted to visit both Amalfi and Positano. This is how I did it: I took the high speed train from Roma Termini to Salerno (direct train 1.5 hours) - walked 5 minutes to the Salerno Port, caught the ferry to Amalfi (25 minutes). I spent a few hours then took another ferry from Amalfi to Positano (15 minutes).

Best way is a fast train from Rome to Salerno, then a ferry to Positano, so easy.

honestly best way as I ve in Italy 2x is take train from rome termini to SALERNO then walk across street there boats that go to Positano (pricey) Amalfi etc 35 min ride if you have ton luggage then, when yo get to base of Positano just cab it to your hotel.

A lot of people are also saying training directly to Salerno (ferry port is right beside the train station so no need to uber to it), and then ferry to Positano. Do you recommend this?

You seem like a nice person but I rented a car in Napoli and drove to San Michele and the ride was amazing. I stopped many times and I saw, and experienced things (like stopping at a local small place to eat) that you would never get by taking the train or bus. The roads can be twisty but my God, c'mon, it's not that bad. Mi spiace...this is bad advice...IMO.

private driver is same as a car. just make sure you can get parking. stay in praiano not positano
