Soundtrack. What made the difference between Macross (Japanese version) and the US alternate universe/ storyline Robotech. The Americans' tastes required a little more bad assery and a multipart saga. Influenced by movies released in this era with full orchestra soundtracks like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and Star Trek. This allowed Rick's and Roy's back stories from nobodies to bad asses to be better filled in than their alternate universe counterparts.
