Treasure Planet: The Movie That Never Was

This movie was rejected for 17 years yet Disney still decided to take it into production despite every big name protesting its idea, losing them over 74 million dollars, firing multiple successful employees and steering the company in a different direction. Was it a coincidence that it flopped, was Disney ahead of its time or were there other problems going on internally at Disney that could be solved by making a movie flop to prove a point?

I grew up with this movie. It single handedly inspired me to start writing a book, and it inspired the creation of my custom dnd setting

Treasure Planet is such an underrated classic. Jim's relationship with John Silver showed that sometimes you find your family along the way.

I've rewatched Treasure Planet couple months ago just to get reminded of how awesome this movie is, and everyone i talk to speaks about it as underrated gem
To this day i cant comprehend how it failed

I so desperately miss the beautiful hand drawn animation of the "Disney Dark Age"....

As a 10 year old I gave zero f's about the voice cast as long as they can do the job. I don't care about the names. As an adult I don't care about the names.

No 10 year old is saying I want to go see a cartoon because it has a specific actor. You spent way to much time on the voice actors and not enough time on Isner wanting 2d to die so they could move on to cheaper 3d.

This movie makes me cry really hard. I dont know why but I just relate to Jim so much. The scene where John Silver is telling him how amazing his potential is, and how he wants to see the sunlight shining from his sails, I turn into a puddle of piss and tears 😂

It's my favorite Disney movie and I still watch it every now and then even at age 30. Definitely deserves much more recognition. Fantastic video, have a sub!

It had soul and was unique, maybe it was just too unique for the time. I grew up with movies like this. 2d animation just brings back so much nostalgia.

If this was released today it would probably be a hit.

Such a good movie.

97 here I remember seeing Treasure Planet trailers on my other Disney VHS tapes, and I agree that they never got me super interested. But when I grew up and discovered the movie, I can say it's one of my all time favorites.

I grew up with this movie and after seeing many more movies, I'd still consider this one to be one of my favorites. This was such a great movie that sadly didn't get the recognition it deserved.

24:00 - 14:35 This is just perfidious.
Imagine pitching your dream idea to some big CEO for 17 years and finally getting a greenlight, ONLY to later on realise that this idea was used by the CEO to kill something a fuck lot of people, including yourself, loved.

Targeting an older demographic in a kids movie is like a long term investment. When those kids grow up, they’ll understand the movie on a deeper level and it turns it into a nostalgia classic.

Captain Amelia is my favorite character of the movie, with the boots, her design reminds me of Elastigirl from The Incredibles, even though the latter film was released 2 years after Treasure Planet

come on, treasure island may not be the most popular book in history, but its core story is very well known. if you dont know silver is the bad guy, then its on you. this is what, the 40th version of a trasure island movie?

This one is definitely one of my favorites. I honestly wish Jim was a more prevalent meet and greet character in the parks possibly getting into a few shenanigans with Milo from Atlantis. Treasure Planet has so many scenes that could've made for awesome rides. This one is my older sister's favorite, if there was a ride for this one, I'd take her. I think it was mostly a missed opportunity, this probably could've become it's own franchise, we might have even gotten that crossover with Atlantis The Lost Empire that fans also like to make with so many of them believing Jim and Milo would be great friends. One thing's for sure though, if I ever go to a Disney Park, and Jim is around, I'm getting an autograph.

Treasure Planet is one of my favorite movies along with Great Mouse Detective…I hate how they deliberately threw it under the bus

When he was a kid, my boyfriend made up tons of space pirate stories. They were inspired by his love of Star Wars & Treasure Island. When this came out & we saw that it was Treasure Island in space, we were all over it. We went to the theater five times to see it on the big screen. We still love this movie. 🥰 F the critics, 🖕 they don't know 💩
