Massive fire breaks out at New Jersey chemical factory

A 11-alarm fire broke out Friday night at a chemical factory in Passaic, New Jersey, officials said. CBS New York reports from the scene of the blaze.

Just wondering why chemical plants are allowed to be this close to populated areas to begin with.

There was a chemical plant north of Rockford IL in Rockton that had a massive fire last year. We could see the smoke over head 70 miles away. This is horrifying.

Chlorine is not flammable and cannot burn. It is an oxidizer and it won’t react with oxygen. However, as an oxidizer, it can cause fires to burn faster, hotter, and more intensely. It can even cause explosions in certain situations.
