Parents and athletes really would be wise to listen to what you have to say about all levels of collegiate baseball. You’ve touched on it in other videos and hint at it in this one, but for a baseball player who also sees going to college as an academic experience JUCO is probably not the athlete’s best path. For this type athlete I would think D3 is well suited. D3 is loaded with extremely high academic instructions with solid athletic programs. If an athlete does dream of still reaching D1 then D3 offers just as good a path as JUCO by way of the summer leagues and the portal PLUS it is more likely that academic credits will transfer from a high academic D3 to a D1. If for the student athlete baseball ends after graduation the bet you made on yourself to earn a degree from a high academic D3 school will pay for more dividends than taking a risk through the JUCO route. Again, nothing wrong with the JUCO path, but for an academic kid that might not be physically ready for D1 it is hard to beat D3. I love that you shine a light on all of these levels of college baseball. It’s a huge service.

My son’s college coach said for 99% of you, you’re picking your retirement home. You can go to a scrappy Juco in a dusty town and maybe transfer in 2 years or you can play here (D3) where you’re going to eat well, travel well, get good uniforms and gear. You can settle in and get a great education which is really what matters in the long run. He seems pretty happy with his decision.

The JUCO's want to see kids transfer to bigger better places. It helps their program. D 3's don't want to lose kids after 2 years. Many D3's have "JV" programs. Human nature would predict that kids get "hidden" on these JV teams so that the competition doesn't try to sweet talk them, and to hinder portal losses. D3 is the place to go for kids who have their hearts and minds set on academic programs. If a kid is shooting for their baseball dreams, the JUCO route is not as prone to burning bridges or hurting feelings, programs by transferring.

Excellent walk through of the current landscape. A real shame that ball has turned out this way, but nice to see someone say it like it is. Hope folks take notice.

My son is at a crossroads. He's a good ballplayer. Starting 8th grade this year. His current school is one of the best academic institutions in our state. It starts at 6th and goes through high school, but is only a 1A baseball program (the lowest classification). If he continues on here academically he can pretty much choose is his school.. but the level of play and the team he'll play on isn't going to be great. He is pushing a little bit to look at other schools for high school. The best decision for his education is going to be to stay.. is it going to make a big difference in his athletic recruiting if he stays at a smaller school? Particularly if he is playing on a competitive travel team?

How did baseball get this screwed up Coach... The way parents are taught they should not take things so seriously, doesn't seem to apply to the adults that are profiting in HS, travel, and College baseball. Its a shame and bothers me just as much as how MLB teams taking advantage of young players in countries south of the US where they sign away their rights as children without legal representation.

Baseball use to mean something to our nation... It just a massive disappointment to see how disgusting this all has become.
