The Mafia was always into drugs. The general prohibition against drugs was because the Mob didn't want to tangle with FEDERAL law enforcement and they wanted their Black street dealing lackeys in Harlem to be the public face of narcotics and thus take the lion's share of the heat. The 'no drugs' rule was to give the bosses deniability. The real rule wasn't 'don't deal drugs'. The REAL rule was 'Don't get CAUGHT dealing with drugs'. In other words, run your operations so tight that if one of your underlings gets caught messing with drugs, it can't be traced back to the family.

The Bonnanos were the biggest drug dealers of all the Five Families and Joe Bonnano himself swore in a televised interview that he knew nothing about drug dealing the whole time which is almost absurd to the point of hilarity. One of his big lieutenants, Carmine Galante, was one of the most notorious heroin traffickers of his day. I know the old timer bosses of the families were against drug dealing, at least as far as their made guys doing it, but all of them would also happily take money from guys who they must've known were getting it from dealing and trafficking dope behind their back. It's a falsehood to claim they put effective bans on dealing with drugs out of any concern for their neighborhood or children; it had everything to do with heat from law enforcement and sentences being so severe that the likelihood of guys becoming rats was quite high. They still took the money from it. Even Lucky Luciano was a big time heroin trafficker in his day and reign. The only reason that Castellano would have wanted to hit Gotti's guys for dealing is because their dealing led to phone wiretaps that led up to Castellano indicted by the FBI, and Gotti's guys didn't want to give up the tapes for Castellano to learn 1) They were dealing heroin, 2) They were lobbing personal and disrespectful insults at Castellano, and 3) Castellano could simply use the "deal or die" edict to morally justify hitting them when really, he would've wanted to hit them for fucking him over with their idiocy.

Career criminals are an enigma to me. On one side they act like they have a code, on the other the point of being a criminal is their inability to respect the law.
