Dang I wonder whose idea was to replace a castle with a multi Head Snake monster

That's sounds much more epic than fighting a giant monster. In my mind Heracles become a bait to draw the archers attention while Iolaus find a spot to burn the fort, using a strategy to overcome their advantage for impenetrable defenses and high grounds. But it makes another question, who are these Archers actually? Are they bandits? Or hostile country soldiers? Undeads? Or another creature Hera sent?

A head-replacing monster is pretty fantastic, but a besieged fortress with fifty archers but an unlimited supply of trained recruits is quite a stretch as well.

It's fun to conjecture What Might Really Have Happened in fanciful tales, as sometimes there's a germ of inspiration in romantic accounts, however, the mark of an overwrought "explanation" is that they proposer connects TOO MANY details.

Mythologized versions of history are scarcely recognizable next to their inspirations. Generally one point, or at most two, are in common.

Example of a possibly inspired story: the Pied Piper of Hamelin MAY be a dim memory of the Children's Crusade, an historical event. The disappearance of children is the pivot point, but all the rest, the rats, the money, the river, the town's renege, the piper himself, that's all creative enhancement.

The Bible story of David and Goliath has been "explained" as Goliath suffering from a debilitating disease like Robert Wadlow, and bringing in all kinds of conjecture [he had a shield bearer, so he was too weak to carry his own shield; he couldn't see David clearly, so he was nearly blind, etc.]

ALL the Labors of Heracles were fantastic, except MAYBE cleaning the stables, there's no need to invent historical parallels.

The multiple headed reptile sounds cooler though

Side note: Hydrangeas are known for their numerous blossoms on 1 head... also used for getting rid of generational curses by drying them upside down and burning them in first fire of spring chanting "find it, break it, burn it".

This makes... waaaay too much sense... wow... I'd love to hear more debunking the myth shorts

Huh, neato.

I've heard about other rationalizations, but this one sounds so much more plausible than trying to figure out a real animal for Hercules to hero to death.

Makes one think how many more myths are permutations of something that actually happened versus stories.

Great videos 👍🏻👍🏻

Hydra was actually just a leopard gecko that grew its tail back

Interesting theory when it's always believed there's at least some truth to all stories. Which implies this guy thinks Heracules was real and, as I've seen some media joke and propose, just really hyped up.

I've heard of multiple versions of *how* Heracles slew the Hydra...

That's so much more epic, though
Imagine SINGLE-HANDEDLY taking on and WINNING against a forteress of over 50 archers ???

So instead of fighting a giant multi headed snake, Heracles single handedly besieged a fortress, shooting down 50 archers while his nephew burnt down the towers? How is this any less badass?

Since there is another “dragon” with 7 heads in a book. And in this book it refers to a city. I would agree with this archers on towers retelling.

Did a huge dragon-like creature with 50 heads really exist? & Every time you cut off 1 of it's heads 2 more would take it's place?
Absolutely Not...that's ridiculous!
Me: Uuuh...ya think‽

That makes sense...you do a full video on it

I'm sure even hercules was a myth....

Not a cousin, Iolaos was his nephew. Nice interpretation of the myth nonetheless.

So the Hydra is fake but but him changing the flow of a mighty sea to clean the horses stalls is believable...

I mean, beating a bunch of ancient sniper nests is still badass!

Im curious. Why would the fortress be there and does it have anything to do with heracles hydra poison arrows

Also didnt the hydra live in a swamp next to an entrance to the underworld

Im really interested into how these would fit into the fortress idea

Any theories in the comments
