The traditional American lawn is a time-consuming, resource-wasting mistake. It's time to kill the lawn and find new ways to create livable outdoor spaces. "The American Meadow Garden" offers homeowners a new model — the designed meadow. What is a meadow? Any landscape in which grasses dominate— sprinkled with a mixture of colorful bulbs, perennials, shrubs, and annuals. Greenlee's meadows are vibrant, shimmering mini-ecosystems that are friendly to kids, pets, and butterflies. Even better — they require minimal resources and absolutely no mowing.

I created what he's talking about using grasses that are native to my area mixed with native wildflowers...it's so rewarding and so beautiful...I mow once in the fall and supplement with rainwater collected in barrels. He's right..butterflies and bees and birds love it...I never knew a lawn could be so rewarding...it's a different kind of gardening....If you have a turf lawn, I'd say rip it up and start learning about the native grasses in your area...It will bring you lots of joy...

Amen brother! I have an entire residential property devoted to giving it all back to the wildlife of the area... An oasis and potential permanent home for many creatures seeking refuge from an ever increasing hostile man-made environment-- Within10 minutes of the capitol of Georgia. 90% of my plant materials have come from Nearly Native Nursery in Fayetteville, Georgia-- Where I worked part time for over 3 years.
