Squirrel sees scrub jay (bird) in the yard and begins vocalizing. The bird flew up and began tapping back. They then made ticking and tapping sounds back and forth for a while. This is an excerpt from that encounter.

Neither attacked the other and they resumed going about their individual business in the surrounding area after a few minutes.

This particular scrub jay is around a lot and often taps as a way of communicating to humans and other animals. The bird will sometimes knock on doors or tap on objects to get humans and other animals to look over at them or specific objects.

Scrub jays are known to be highly intelligent and have been able to solve puzzles in research studies. This particular bird also hides things and marks them using bits of surrounding bark.
