TIM BURTON'S HANSEL & GRETEL
(1982 DISNEY CHANNEL HALLOWEEN SPECIAL)
This is Burton's unique, twisted, Burtonesque version of the classic Grimm Fairy Tale featuring an all Asian cast. Hansel and Gretel are the two children of a poor toy maker, whose evil stepmother wishes to do away with them to avoid starving. After being intentionally led away in the woods, they come across a gingerbread house attended to by a bizarre, but seemingly nice old hag with a candy cane nose! (played by the same male actor as the Stepmother) who turns out to have evil designs for our heroes!

After the initial airing, Disney Channel execs were so distraught by the frightening subject matter, that they never allowed the film to be shown again. Thankfully, someone managed to tape it that night, which provides us with this footage.

CAST
---------
Hansel - Andy Lee
Gretel - Alison Hong
Stepmother / Wicked Witch - Michael Yama
Father - Jim Ishida
Dan Dan the Gingerbread Man (voice) - David Koenigsburg

Features early work by Stephen Chiodo of the Chiodo Bros. Studio as well as the late Joe Ranft of Disney and Pixar.

Music by John Costa of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood fame!

I wasn’t ready✨😭✨ between the green mush and the sentient cookie, the existential horror of this flick is off the charts✨🥺✨ Like…damn…he really put his WHOLE foot into this unsettling tale.✨💀✨

This Masterpiece needs to be put on Disney+ and deserves a 4K Disc Remaster

I find it hard to believe that Tim Burton directed this.

Idk why, but it’s pretty nice to see a hidden Tim Burton short film. I could see things in this movie that he does to this day. 😋😋😋

It doesn't surprise me that Johnny Costa did the music for this, because the whole thing feels like an evil episode of Mister Rogers.

You know, it’s tragic that of all the times Tim Burton had the opportunity to traumatize me as a child, this wasn’t one of them. #lol

I grew up in the 90s as a child I recall seeing stuff like this on the tv for kids and alot of parents didn't pay attention to the content that was playing but being so young I couldn't understand it I just knew that the shows kinda freaked me out and it really made my dreams dark as the years progressed I remember when shows like ahh real monsters came out I love that show but it had a kind of dark humor that kinda freaked me out its shows like that and this that showed me what real horror was and it wasn't the shows it was real life mr meaty was the last real freaky kids show that I've seen since now kids shows are boring and dont teach any real values like these shows anymore.

This displays all of Burton's flaws as well as his strengths - in spite of his unique visual style, you realize his casting choices, his storytelling, and his way of handling actors is always hit-or-miss, even in his better movies; he tends to just let actors "do their own thing, " for better or worse. He may be a bold visualizer, but he's not much of a craftsman.

How I wish someone would do a faithful, shot for shot Tim Burton style stop motion homage to this.

I wonder if Disney still owns this?
