Mount Everest's garbage problem is growing: Camp 4, in particular, was dirtier than ever. Tenzi Sherpa, who climbed the mountain recently with Madison Mountaineering, said it was the worst he had seen.

“Lots of tents, empty oxygen bottles, steel bowls, spoons, sanitary pads, paper,” he wrote on Instagram, and included a damning video, which we will feature in this interview with Tenzi Sherpa from Kathmandu.

We aim to offer solutions to the problem within this video.

TIME STAMPS:

00:00 - Tenzi Sherpa footage from Camp 4
00:30 - Introduction to Everest garbage situation
1:26 - Comparison to National Parks in USA
1:53 - self governing of expedition operators, Damien Bengas

The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) — they are in charge of fixing the route through the Khumbu Icefall every season — manages waste issues in Base Camp, sends observers to Camp 2. Every climber going beyond Base Camp must bring down eight kilos of garbage on the way back.

Tenzi Sherpa helps lead the way in asking for changes on the mountain.

I was always taught that the first rule of wilderness camping and trekking is "Pack out everything you pack in". Leave footprints only.

They should stop climbing until all the rubbish is cleared up and Companies should all have to pay 'rubbish tax' on top of other fees. This is a disgusting situation.

I remember 90's when the climbers were actuall climbers, and not rich clients, and how climbing Everest became an industry .

This is utterly disgusting! One of the conditions of getting the permit should be that you have to clean up after yourself. If people can drag all that trash up there, they can bleeding well bring it back down again. No excuses!

Why isn't he blaming and shaming all those narcissists who leave all that trash up there? They did it. All they care about is showing off. Who cares if they're out of breath and can't take their garbage out? no one forced them to go there in the first place. Arrange for your own trash to be carried out and that will take care of it.

Very convenient. I was looking at pictures of abandoned tents on Everest and trying to figure out why they all have one strange shape cut out and you explained it perfectly. Thank you!

I feel so much for the Sherpas and the animals. The abuse is unthinkable

Years ago during the year of the earthquake, the Indian army group gathered tons of trash, dump truck size loads, and it was only a tiny fraction of what all is there. It's unbelievable. I live in the Appalachian Mountains and thankfully the "leave no trace" rule for the most part works well. You'll still see some here and there, but nothing like Everest.

So disrespectful. Too tired to bring a tent back but enough energy to cut logos out. Shame on them.

Thank you Thom for doing a video about this. The more people who are aware of the situation the better. I totally understand climbers are exhausted climbing. If every climber did some trash removal it will help. Would like to see the operations be more involved in removing their trash. Hopefully something will be done. Everest is an amazing place. Awareness is key to getting something done about it. Have good day everyone! 😊

Thanks again, Thom. Sad to see such majesty betrayed.

Thank you Tingyn Sherpa speaking out. I would think every group have 2 extra sherpas that don’t carry anything up so they are able to carry extra down. These companies are responsible. I understand some can barely walk and carrying anything is difficult to say the least. But we have to do something

The climbers are solely responsible for leaving THEIR garbage on this once pristine mountain, just so they can brag and feel good about themselves. So noble.

This is human behavior. This problem is happening everywhere, beaches, national parks, campgrounds, lakes.

For a moment I thought images were from the day after a music festival 😳 The sense of entitlement from some climbers/climbing companies is simply ridiculous.

This is what happens when money and entitlement become more important than actual skill and experience. Majority of those people should have never even been allowed on the mountain.

A solution needs to be found ASAP. It is a bad reflection on the all who climb this mountain as it appears they have no respect for the environment. If it cannot be "leave no trace", then it should be stopped. It is unsustainable for future climbers.

My uncle was saving up for nearly five years to go to everest with his two friends. But between the "Disney Line" running all up into the death zone with loads of people that normally should not have anything to do with being on the mountain, the sheer amount of trash on the mountain, along with the other growing issue of other climbers now stealing oxygen bottle cashes near the summit. It was just heartbreaking. So they settled for a hike vacation to the areas an towns around the motian with a hotel with a view of Everest. The people there were so amazing an welcoming to them, got to see things normal hikers don't get to see long their trip to the summit. But at dinner an some drinks, ho-boy did the locals have some horror stories to share regarding the new crowd that are starting to appear. One group lost one of the Sherpas on descent from an accident, an the group he was with aside the groups one other Sherpa didn't even bother to show up for his ceremony. The laws an attitudes regarding Everest need some serious change.

Whatever happened to "Leave no trace" with respect to camping. Sad and disgusting to see.

Thom, I´m with you. Schocking. I knew this shameful reality 10 years ago. But now it is truely embaracing. New climbers are selfish an egocentric. only think on selfies for their instagram accounts. Shame on them. Thank you for your job. The more people who are aware of the situation the better.
