Plasma Tornado

Watch a plasma tornado swirl around a glass vacuum vessel in this physics demonstration. A small amount of nitrogen gas is leaked into the vacuum vessel while it is continuously evacuated by a 2-stage rotary vane vacuum pump. The plasma is made by a neon sign transformer. When the pump is shut off, the plasma column swirls, producing a 'plasma tornado'.
