Insider's Guide to SHANGHAI FOOD | China

Показать описание
Three generations of Shanghai-born locals share our knowledge of authentic Shanghainese cuisine from this amazing food city. Peter, his parents and his beloved cute granny aka "Wai Po" take us into their world of insanely delicious Shanghai food.
If you've never tried Shanghai food before, you're missing out. Shanghai cuisine is one of our favourite so we're sharing with you what we think are some of the best Shanghai restaurants in China on this episode.
Unfortunately you won't be able to get a seat in the first restaurant though since it's at Peter's Aunty + Grandma's house! Whenever we go back to China and Shanghai, we always get together to experience one of the most famous Shanghai dishes with Peter's family which is hairy crab (also known as Chinese mitten crab).
Hairy crab (大闸蟹 / Dàzháxiè / Du Zha Ha) is a Shanghai delicacy and the best hairy crab in Shanghai is one that's fresh, steamed to perfection and has golden roe which is naturally creamy and buttery. Female hairy crabs sometimes contain more roe than the male hairy crabs, but the roe in the male hairy crab tends to be creamier. Both are equally delicious. There's not a whole lot of meat in these premium quality crabs, and it does take a lot of time to enjoy them but their golden roe is amazing and definitely a must-try food in Shanghai.
If you're wondering 'Where to eat hair crab in Shanghai', since it is one of the most popular Shanghai food dishes, it's not too difficult to find them at Shanghai restaurants. Often the meat from the crab is incorporated into other Shanghai dishes at the top restaurants in Shanghai (like the ones we visit in this episode!)
Next up we head over to Yu Yuan aka Yu Garden for something quite amazing. The Queen of England as well as the Clintons and other notable celebrities have dined at this very famous Shanghai restaurant. Peter has been coming here since he was a little kid to get another traditional dish that Shanghai is famous for... xiao long bao (soup dumplings) which also include a hairy crab twist. We've eaten a lot of xiaolong bao before, but this place has the absolute best xiao long bao we've ever had hands down. Because hairy crab is so good in Shanghai, when you're in Shanghai you have to try xiaolong bao that has this delicious crab meat infused in them. We also tried a bunch of Chinese desserts including ones that Queen Elizabeth ate on her visit to this Shanghai restaurant too. Lu Bo Lang is situated right in the middle of Yu Yuan Garden. Be aware though, it can be quite a wait to get a seat but it's so worth it.
Lu Bo Lang
Address: 115 Yu Yuan Road, Shanghai 200010, China
Next we try one of the most famous old school Shanghainese restaurants which Peter's Dad went to since he was young. This place is rich in history and was first opened in 1875 called:
Shanghai Classical Hotel. It's called "hotel" but it is a famous Shanghai cuisine restaurant in Yu Garden, Shanghai. It serves traditional Shanghai dishes as well as other Chinese cuisines too.
Shanghai Classical Hotel (上海老饭店 / Shanghai Lao Fan Dian)
Address: China, Shanghai, Huangpu, 福佑路242号 邮政编码: 200010
For the final meal in this episode, we go to what became one of our favourite restaurants to visit during our Shanghai, China trip. The food here is simply unbelievable. If you're planning to visit Shanghai, this is a must-try restaurant. Famous Shanghainese dishes like Sheng Jian Bao (生煎包 / pan-friend pork buns), Shanghai Scallion Noodles and of course hairy crab are taken to a whole new level here. This restaurant takes traditional Shanghai food and adds a modern twist.
Shanghai Home Restaurant (上海人家精作坊 / Shanghai Ren Jia Jing Zuo Fang)
Address: 1600 Nanjing W Rd, Jing'an Temple, Jing'an, Shanghai, China
