Government makes everything more expensive and ultimately lower quality. Competition drives value for money and improves quality. What has developed is a limited competitive window. A handful of companies given tax incentives and shielding from liability can do as they will. Some (just recently) have been allowed to continue doing business despite criminal and civil violations. Just search for largest penalty ever assessed to a pharmaceutical company.

This should not be tolerated but we allow lobbyists and so called public servants to become wealthy on their access to power including many with divided loyalties. It's abominable.
