Tributes pour in for actor Donald Sutherland, who died at 88

Hollywood legend Donald Sutherland, whose career spanned more than six decades with iconic roles in “The Dirty Dozen," “M*A*S*H” and the “Hunger Games” franchise, has died at 88. Tributes for the late actor are pouring in from family, friends and fans. NBC’s Chloe Melas reports for TODAY.

He was an excellent actor, an excellent raconteur, and a charming person.
He touched so many lives with his portrayals on screen that on hearing of his passing we all feel a huge sense of loss. Time passes.

I cried when you hugged Conrad and me in front of a house in Lake Forest, IL, after Beth left for Houston. I remember that you said:

"Don't admire people too much. They'll disappoint you sometimes."

I sometime remember this phrase to this day.

I loved the way you speak and the tone of your voice.

I am so sad that both of parents, i.e., Mary Tyler Moor and Donald are now gone forever.

He also portrayed Merrick, Buffy's first watcher in the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer feature film. He paved the way for Anthony Stewart Head's Rupert Giles in the 1997-2003 Buffy the Vampire Slayer Slayer TV series and Alan Alda's Hawkeye Pierce in the 1972-1983 M*A*S*H TV series. Rest in peace, sir. Condolences go out to Kiefer and the rest of the Sullivan kids.
