1972-12-07: Apollo 17 Captures Big Blue Marble

On the 7th of December 1972, Apollo 17 captures the Big Blue Marble and NASA crops and inverts the image to place Sumer at the Top of the World.

The idea for this photograph was conceived by Stewart Brand during an LSD trip, when seeing a "psychedelic illusion" of the Earth's curvature convinced him that a picture of the entire planet would change how humans related to it.

Placing Sumer at the top of the world also prompts humans to explore the origins of modern traditions and religions by digging in ancient Mesopotamia.
