Tensions Rise Between Greece And Turkey
Conflicts between Turkey and Greece have escalated this year, with the Turkish Coast Guard now accusing Greek ships of firing on Ankara-owned cargo ships in the Aegean Sea. According to a statement issued by the Turkish government, no deaths were reported in the incident which occurred at about 20.3 kilometres southwest of Bozcaada Island in the country.
According to reports, two Turkish Coast Guard vessels passed through the area, and several Greek boats launched what Ankara described as 'offensive fire'.
The Turkish Coast Guard also released a video, showing bullet holes in the windows and ceiling of the country's cargo ship. Turkey has claimed that Greece has built a military presence there in violation of international agreements, which guarantee the unarmed status of the Aegean islands.
Meanwhile, Greece maintains that Turkey has deliberately misinterpreted the agreement, adding that it has legal grounds to defend itself. In late April, the two NATO allies, each apparently accusing the other of airspace violations in the Aegean Sea.
Greece informed NATO of a series of flights over the Aegean Sea by Turkish fighter jets, while Turkey responded by saying that Greece was the one who incited the tensions by carrying out provocative flights near the Turkish coast.
