Jonah, a prophet of God, is called to go to the city of Nineveh and warn its people to turn from their wickedness. However, Jonah, fearing the task, tries to flee by boarding a ship headed for Tarshish, far from Nineveh. While at sea, a violent storm threatens to destroy the ship. The sailors discover Jonah is the cause and, at his request, reluctantly throw him into the sea to calm the storm. As Jonah sinks, a giant fish, often referred to as a whale, swallows him whole. Inside the fish’s belly, Jonah spends three days and three nights praying and repenting for his disobedience. God hears Jonah's prayers and commands the fish to spit him out onto dry land. Grateful for a second chance, Jonah finally obeys God and travels to Nineveh, delivering the warning. The people of Nineveh listen, repent of their sins, and God shows mercy by sparing the city. Jonah’s story is one of repentance, mercy, and the importance of obeying God’s will.
