In this YouTube video, Reid discusses the arrival of spring and the growth of plants in the garden. The focus is on two different gardening methods: the Ruth Stout method and traditional composting. Ruth Stout's no-work gardening method involves laying compost materials directly on the soil surface, allowing them to decompose in place, which requires less work overall. Traditional composting, on the other hand, involves managing a compost pile, which can be more labor-intensive but yields a finished product that provides plants with more disease resistance and a balanced mix of nutrients. Reid demonstrates how to hide compost under mulch to avoid anaerobic conditions and mitigate odors, using sawdust as a carbon source.

I love Ruth Stout and her way of gardening. My method is to dig a hole, mix the kitchen scraps with brown leaves, dump it in and top with soil. Works for me!

Great video! I love the Ruth Stout method of gardening and the tips for hiding compost under mulch. Can't wait to try it in my own garden, I also need to find a trash panda :)

Big fan of Ruth Stout method myself! Can't beat not having to deal with turning and watering the compost pile. At my place, tho, I jut need to do this in a place where chickens can't have access. or they will "turn" it for me:).

We use this method 8 months out of the year. When we start planting we use composting piles.

She was a great thinker
I jumped straight on it years ago ...the soil in my beds is exalent ....
Think very hard about where you get your hay/straw from because I didn't for sometime and unfortunately it wasn't from a clean / pesticide free farm 😢. .... Allways in a rush isn't a great way to practice permaculture...but like everything in life I only learn the hard way

Such a great show through of how to do this - I'm going to go and do it right now! Thanks Reid! PS. Is there some sort of kitty wormhole on your slope as the cat disappears and then reappears a bit later... :)

No work, and lots of produce?! I'm in! But I wonder if animals might get at it. Also, I suppose you wouldn't get the heat that kills pathogens as you would when you do traditional compost pile. But then, if it is organic produce from your own garden, that would be moot. Maybe a bad analogy, but a leave-in conditioner comes to mind. Just slap it in and it will make compost in-situ.

Reid is doing a great job with all these videos!

I notice ravens/racoons dig this up when i do it. Almost like they are mining....

I do this in the pathways in my community garden plot. I use the weeds I pull out instead of hat or even cardboard. I bury some things that rodents may like.

OMG... you stole Paul Wheaton's famous ending lines... I think we may have developed a rip in the space time continuum.
