How AL-KO trailer brakes work

AL-KO brakes are fairly common for use on trailers and are also fitted to almost all caravans in the UK.

Many car transporter brands use or have used Al-ko brakes the main one being Brian James that in recent years have only fitted AL-KO axles.

Other applications for Al-ko brakes include many trailed plant equipment manufacturers, Boat trailer manufacturers such as SBS and this currently seems to be fitted to the majority of Indespension axles and trailers.

Ifor williams also used AL-KO brakes until 1992.

This is a simple video that will show you the basics of the brake Identifying parts with a brief explanation of how these work.

Hi Great Videos, can you advise if the expander in your video is the wrong way round. Looking at other videos and another of yours, where you stated it was the wrong way round, the expander here is the same way, which would suggest its the wrong way round. Thanks

Just replaced all cables and fitted new shoes to my trailer. I referred to your excellent video as a guide, mainly to see which way round to fit the expanders but subsequently noticed the comment below about the expanders being the wrong way round. Does this matter or should I start again.

More information on this type of brake needs to be explained ... I have a trailer with this system that that tows forward lovely but reversing it locks up and groans and maybe jackknifes as one wheel is free another will lock up I am going to need to check that top pivot collapses
So it brakes lovely as I used a ratchet strap to squeeze the draw bar ... handbrake pulled on works okay rocking back and forward stationary .... so if I ratchet strap the draw bar to simulate reversing and check rear free wheel both wheels rotate freely ( on jack stands). so confused
My other trailer with same set up is fine ? but the draw bar tube seem to always want to rotate after I unhitch as if its its bent and trying to screw itself out ? but not by eye, is that a valid reason ?

Hei! When I drive reverse my brian james trailer want to stop immediately, so maybe some rust of some reverse mechanism? or brake pads are to close? Before I was thinking that problem is in damper, but after replacement still problem.
