I really enjoyed studying and teaching (preaching) this Lesson! The Gospel of John is getting sweeter and sweeter to my soul! Here learn of one little preposition ("huper") that proves Jesus died for you and for me and for the whole world! He died a "substitutionary" Death!

Watched, learned and enjoyed! Peter might have had moments of weakness, but he also had some boldness to strike at Malchus with 600 men with weapons against him. I too believe Jesus died for everyone! Romans 5:18 - Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon ALL men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon ALL men unto justification of life.

I think John notices people. When he writes, he writes simple because he is from an area where most people lived simple. He seems to be calm, watching, and taking in. I have heard pastors tell people-If you have never read the Bible before, start at John 1. Maybe it’s because John always puts Jesus in a good light, as the Savior.
Jesus laid down his life willingly, how marvelous, how wonderful!!!

Great study, Dr. Bagwell! Matthew, Mark & Luke all give an account of the arrest, however, John gives more details than their accounts do. This probably means John was an eyewitness. A rule of thumb about Peter, "Simon" is his fleshly name and "Peter" is his spiritual name. There is a little bit of flesh that comes out here. "Having"/ἔχω/echō/carried it everywhere he went. "Sword"/μάχαιρα/machaira/a small sword. Peter was trying to kill this man. He was aiming for his head or neck but was only able to sever his right ear. Sometimes God allows us to be on target and other times He deflects something we want to do in order that we don't cause harm to us or others. Luke tells us that Jesus healed this man's ear. Jesus healed the ear of an enemy. "Malchus" has a Hebrew background, and it means king. Why did Matthew, Mark & Luke record the arrest and not give Malchus' name? Matthew, Mark & Luke could not give the name of Peter because he could go to prison. When John is writing, he could use Peter's name without repercussions. Malchus also could be saved at the time John was writing. This is the last miracle the Lord performed before the cross, healing the ear of an enemy. Jesus is not against someone arming themselves for protection. Jesus is against violence to carry forth His name. Jesus gives Peter a loving rebuke. Jesus believes the Father has given Him everything. He believes the Father gave Him every meal. He believes that every soul that is saved is a gift from the Father. He believes the bride of Christ is a gift from His Father. Here Jesus says He believes His cross is a gift from the Lord. their hands on Him. "Bound"/δέω/deō/chained. Isaac was bound on the altar by Abraham as a type of Christ. Now, we see Jesus being bound. "Annas" means humble, lowly. Annas was not humble and lowly. Annas was no longer the current sitting high priest. Rome took his position from him. Annas controlled the priesthood after Rome took away his position. These high priests are not Godly men, they are apostates. They crucified Jesus for envy. Jesus was upsetting their little money cart. They are taking Jesus to a Jewish court, the 70 elders of Israel. John goes back and forth between Jesus and Peter in this chapter. He goes from Peter who is a coward to Jesus who is brave, Peter who is a liar to Jesus who is the truth, Peter who is weak and Jesus who is strong. Wow! Great analogy. Caiaphas believes if they kill Jesus that the nation will be better off. "Die"/ἀπόλλυμι/apollumi/to perish, to be destroyed. "For"/ὑπέρ/huper/in the place of. Jesus died for whosoever will! Thank you for this study, Dr. Bagwell! It was awesome!
