I just realized...Boruto's rasengan may "vanish" because of his Hyuga blood/techniques. The Hyuga shinobi are able to "throw" their chakra in an unseen manner with gentle fist techniques. This along with his wind chakra attribute and ability to use the rasengan would lead to the chakra being able to "disperse" so that it cannot be seen but at the same time allows it to still exist in a concentrated form similar to the rasengan while being thrown like a rasenshuriken. That would explain why when he throws the rasengan it explodes like a rasenshuriken rather than hitting like a solid rasengan or gentle fist strike.
