Tilted Atwood machine with friction: diagram, normal force, friction force, acceleration, tension.
In this problem, we have a tilted Atwood machine with a block sliding up the ramp pulled by a string attached to a larger block hanging vertically from a pulley.
The block on the ramp experiences a friction force opposing the direction of slipping.
First, we make complete force diagrams for each block in the Atwood machine. We find components of the weight vector at this point, and we compute the normal force and friction force on the sliding block.
Next, we set up a system of equations by applying Newton's second law to each moving mass. We solve the system of equations by eliminating tension and solving for acceleration, and we obtain the acceleration of the Atwood machine.
Finally, we plug back in to one of the original equations and solve for tension in the Atwood machine.
