Over the last few years - there has been a renewed demand to delete the words 'socialism' and 'secularism' from the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. The logic on offer is that these words were inserted by 'force' in the 42nd Amendment of the Constitution and are not constant with Indian thought and culture.

But even if that logic is accepted for arguments sake - will removing these two words alter our Constitution???? Is secularism and socialism limited to the Preamble or runs much much deeper in our Constitution. It is true that the 2 words "socialism" and "secularism" were added by Indira Gandhi in 1976 when the opposition was put in jail. There was violation of fundamental rights because of which later a bill was passed so that the fundamental rights of people can be protected even in the case of an Emergency. There was a debate in the constituent assembly whether or not to add these 2 words in the constitution and the decision was in against as it was against the heart of the nation and bharat had always followed pluralism far before any constitution existed.
All this being said truth remains that in today's date it is impossible to remove these 2 words from the constitution as there will be more protests against it with people who would know nothing about the topic giving the headcount for a mass protest.
