It’s a right of passage! Yes it’s to identify their beauty but has nothing to do with finding a rich husband. If you’re going to tell a story tell it correctly especially about a culture you known nothing about. A lip plate is evidence of each woman’s fertility and proof that she is ready for marriage. It is meant to show that a girl has reached marriageable age and is ready to become a wife.
