A psychiatrist in training almost dropped out because he couldn’t afford medical school tuition, currently around $37,000 a year for Hawai’i residents. Another, now a family medicine doctor, feared he wouldn’t be able to afford to travel to U.S. Medical Residency Programs to apply for required training that follows medical school. A third, a future general surgeon, said he will be able to practice in Hawai’i because scholarships helped to lessen the huge tuition debt he accumulated during four years of college and four years of medical school.
