1st step: Point the muzzle in a safe direction, clear the weapon and ensure it's safe. (No magazine inserted, ensure there is no cartridge in the chamber by visually and physically inspecting the chamber.)

2nd Step: Continue to point the muzzle in a safe direction and squeeze the trigger.

3rd step: That's where you started...

Step Two: Do not pull the slide back and inspect the chamber to ensure the gun is clear.

Two important steps at the top that need to be included…
1. Check to make sure your weapon is clear
2. On Glocks you need to pull the trigger before you can start taking the firearm apart.

The existence of step 2, makes step one even more important
