What does the death rattle sound like | Hours before death. When a person is dying you will begin to hear a rattling or gurgling sound in the last hours to days before death. In healthcare this sound is called Terminal Secretions. However, it is often called the death rattle because of the rattling sound you hear and the association that death is near. This sound is often uncomfortable for family to hear, but at this stage of the dying process, the person is in a deep sleep or unconscious state and is not in any pain. While this sound makes families think the dying person is drowning, they are not. This video explains what is happening when you hear the death rattle.

Well, knowing about it doesn't lessen the scariness of death for ME, because it's still death. But it's good to know about it. Thanks for the explanation. I never knew this was a thing until today.

I heard my mom make this sound at 9 pm when I went to go see her. I asked the nurse what it was, who looked like a high school student & there was actually a book on her desk as if she was studying something. She did not say it was a death rattle. She just said, it was a gargle sound. The sound was very disturbing to me as I had not heard of any such sound before. At 1 AM I got a call from the hospital. They were doing CPR & asked if I wanted to say anything to my mom. I was in such shock that I could not say anything. At about 3PM they called back to pronounce her death. I was so mad at the hospital that is one reason I could not speak as they admitted it was their mistakes. I now regret not saying anything to my mom because I was told that sometimes people snap back into health when you talk to them when CPR is administered.

It's honestly shocking to me that euthanasia is not an option in human medicine. A veterinarian, allowing this point is so cruel.
