Toshiba N300 NAS HDWG440 4TB (2022) - Hard Drive Sounds

These are pretty loud! I can hear them across the other side of the room.
They're quite fast and seem to run rather cool compared to the HGST drives they're replacing. That's not really much of a surprise though, since these drives only have 3 platters, compared to the 5 in the HGST drives.

A long overdue replacement drive for my aging HGST Deskstar NAS drives (HDN724040ALE640). They've all reached 50k hours, so it's finally time to retire them. They've been great. Haven't experienced a single failure. These Toshiba drives seem promising in terms of reliability, so hopefully they last as long as the HGST drives.

Thanks for checking out the video.

I got two Toshiba X300 4TB drives back in November 2020 and they've always seemed to make spin-up and seek noises

Did you enhance the sound? This terrifies me. I just ordered this model.

I do like the new Toshiba 3.5" spindle start sound. The same sound can be heard in the DT02s as well, despite those using Hitachi HDAs. I have a HDWR480 as my main video storage drive (if you search on my channel you'll find it), and both are descended from the same lineup of enterprise drives (MG08-D), hence why they're loud, though oddly enough I don't think my HDWR480 is actually louder than a WD10EZEX. Both have the same seek test sequence too; namely, a long delay between full speed and the first seek test, and the seek tests also sound the same. Oddly enough, when you command the HDWR480 to spin down using ATA Sleep (as opposed to simply yanking power from it), it makes a unique buzz midway through, which stops when you remove power from it.

Hi. Thanks for the video. I am about to buy a 3 baye qnap nas. And I am at the stage of deciding which drive to choose, between wd red plus Toshiba n300 or iron wolf. In the video the drive seems very noisy, I would like to get just tr n300 14 tb with helium technology. You say the noise would be very loud? Compared to other hard drives are the n300 less noisy? Thanks

My 2018 9TB N300 died yesterday while in use. No longer registering to OS no matter what. Spins up, is trying to initialize/read something but seems constantly failing. No spin down however, no longer seen by OS since initialization seems to fail. bad luck . only 6yrs or service :'(

You use Gnome Disk Utility under Linux for the Benchmark right?
I can tell this by the sound of the random seek test this drive makes. The more samples you set the more the delay after few seconds.
